And you can host your blog with whatever hosting platform you can afford, plus the flexibility of moving your blog to any host of choice at any time.
If you already have experience blogging, and want to host your blog by yourself, then WordPress should be considered.
Blogger
I’ve used Blogger to create blogs in the past, and I think it’s one of the cheapest ways to start a blog with your own unique domain name.
With Blogger, you get free hosting from Google, so you can either create a free blog with the blogspot domain or link your custom domain name to the platform and you’ll have a professional looking blog.
Blogger has thousands of unique templates to choose from, so you’re likely to be spoilt for choice in terms of what design template to choose from.
In my opinion, Blogger is perfect for intermediate bloggers who just want to have a blog to write without tinkering with many customizations.
The only downside I see with the Blogger platform is that moving your blog to other platforms can be frustrating if not impossible.
Early this year, I wanted to move a blog from Blogger to WordPress, but there was no way to properly export the blog.
I had to painfully copy and paste over 50 articles, and that left a somewhat bitter taste in my mouth about using Blogger.
Medium
Medium is one of the simplest platforms to start a blog as a Nigerian.
The platform features a rich community of writers and readers who can support your creative work.
For some reason, Medium is not popular in Nigeria, but my experience with it was great, as you can just start writing immediately without any technical learning curve.
I believe Medium was built for writers by writers, as every tool you need to start creating blog content is immediately available for use once you sign up on the platform.
If you are a writer who just wants to write and share your opinion, then Medium is a great match.
Quora
Quora is a question and answer platform that has evolved into a platform for sharing opinions about anything.
If you don’t just want to write, but are looking to provide helpful content to other people’s inquiries, then Quora will be a perfect fit.
With Quora, you don’t have to worry about content ideas, as you can just pick a question of interest and provide a helpful answer.
Many bloggers on Quora use the platform for building an audience and following, which they could later funnel into their email list.
X (formerly Twitter)
Blogging on X is perfect for people who want to write about trending topics and be involved in popular conversations.
With X, you can tweet a short quote, a series of tweets, or long-form content if you are verified on the platform.
If you write on topics such as politics, celebrities, religion, and on trending societal issues, then X is a great platform that will give you immense reach and followership.
Facebook is becoming the go-to platform for lifestyle bloggers in Nigeria.
With Facebook, you can create content on your personal lifestyle, travels, and experiences.
The good thing is that you can start blogging and sharing content with people that know you and are already connected with you.
If you’re blogging to keep an archive of your experiences or looking to share your life updates with friends and family, then Facebook is the right platform to get started.
Instagram, just like Facebook, is a lifestyle blogging platform that could be used to curate and share lifestyle content and personal experiences.
It could also be used by pop culture bloggers in niches such as fashion, music, and comedy.
Then again, you should not allow the platform to limit the type of content you want to create.
A few creators in Nigeria have used Instagram to build a following by posting content that others might not have envisaged.
For example, the popular Nigerian gossip news brand, Instablog9ja was built entirely from Instagram by posting celebrity news and updates, and they have amassed over 6 million followers.
In the same vein, Tunde Ednut, a news, entertainment and lifestyle blogger in Nigeria has leveraged Instagram to attract over 4 million followers who engage with his content and pages.
