If you have an active MoMo account and have not yet linked your Bank Verification Number (BVN), then you are probably operating a basic MoMo account with limited features.
To upgrade your MoMo account and get access to full banking features, then you have to link your BVN like a normal bank account.
One of the fastest ways to link your BVN to your MoMo account is via USSD.
I tried the USSD method to link my BVN to my MoMo account and it was quite a breeze. I think I completed the whole process in just 6 steps.
In this post, I want to show you exactly how I did it, and maybe you could quickly do the same and start enjoying the several benefits of owing a MoMo account.

MoMo USSD Method
The first step to linking your BVN to your MoMo account is to access the MoMo USSD.
The MoMo USSD is *671#
Simply dial *671# from the phone number you used to open the MoMo account. This is also your MoMo account number without the first zero.
You’ll receive a USSD prompt which shows the MoMo USSD home page, with a heading: Welcome to MoMo.
On this prompt, reply with 8 for the Acct Mgmt option.
On the next prompt, which is the Account Management prompt, reply with 2 to select the ‘Link BVN’ option.
On the next prompt, you’ll be required to enter your BVN and click send.
On the next prompt, you’ll be required to enter your MoMo account PIN to authorize BVN linkage with your MoMo.
Once that is completed, you’ll receive a message that your BVN has been successfully linked to your MoMo account.
Here’s what the message says:
“Congratulations! You have successfully linked your BVN to your MoMo PSB and your wallet has been upgraded. Thank you.”
MoMo Account Upgrade Benefits
With your BVN linked to your MoMo account and your account upgraded, you’ll be able to access the full MoMo banking experience which includes:
- Higher Transaction Limits: you can receive and send higher amounts (up to 200k) more than a basic MoMo account which is often limited to a maximum of 50k Naira
- Higher Wallet Balance: you will be able to hold a larger balance (up to 500k) than a basic MoMo account which is often limited to a maximum balance of 300k Naira
- Account Verification: with a BVN linked and verified to your MoMo account, your account becomes verified and less likely to be restricted if your transaction volume increases
FAQs About Linking BVN to MoMo Account
Can you use NIN instead of BVN for MoMo Account Upgrade?
No, you have to link your BVN to upgrade your MoMo account, and use the service as a verified banking customer.
Your NIN may be required for further upgrade or verifications of your MoMo account.
Is it Compulsory to link your BVN to MoMo Account?
It is not compulsory to link your BVN to your MoMo account, but it is mandatory if you want to enjoy better banking features.
Without linking your BVN and upgrading your MoMo account, you’ll be limited in terms of how much you can receive, hold, and send with the account.
Can you still receive money on MoMo without linking your BVN?
Of course, you can still use your MoMo account to receive money as a digital wallet, without linking your BVN. However, transactions might be limited to a maximum of 50k Naira.
What if you don’t have a BVN?
If you don’t have a BVN, you can register for one at a local branch of your bank. If you don’t currently use any bank, then you have to approach a bank to open an account and then register a BVN while doing so.
