10 AdSense Blogging Alternatives to Make Money Online in Nigeria

Ever since I started blogging, AdSense has been the default way to monetize my content and make money online.

As you probably know, AdSense is owned by Google, and that means most AdSense blogs are mostly reliant on search traffic.

In this case, if your search traffic increases, your adsense earnings will correspond, and vice versa.

However, this also limits the earning potential for content writers, as well as make their earnings over-reliant on Google.

So, how do you deal with this?

Well, I advocate for trying out other alternatives to blogging with AdSense and see which one works for you.

Many content writers in Nigeria already have strong followership on social media and other platforms, so why not stick to those and start monetizing their content there?

That is exactly what I want to show you in this post.

The world of blogging does not start and end with AdSense. You can make money (lots of it) with or without AdSense if you learn to treat your content as a product or a business.

Let your mind open to a new world of possibilities.

Facebook Blogging

For many content creators in Nigeria today, Facebook has been the go to platform to find an audience.

But what of content writers?

Do Facebook users read any content if at all?

My response to that is a resounding yes. Facebook readers enjoy both visual and text content, so you can build a following there.

The good thing about Facebook is that you can now get monetized and get paid for publishing engaging content at no financial cost.

All you have to do is open your Facebook feed and start publishing.

Amazon Kindle Publishing

If you feel that your written contents are too valuable to be offered for free, then you can sell them via the Amazon Kindle Publishing (Amazon KDP) programme.

You could sell to a global audience and get paid in U.S dollars right here in Nigeria.

And you can publish all kinds of contents such as fiction stories, non-fiction work, drawing books, writing templates, etc.

To get ideas, simply go to the Amazon KDP platform and take a look at some of the book categories.

You could also research some of the best selling niches and content to get an idea of what kinds of content actually sell on the platform.

How much you make on Amazon KDP will depend on the amount of effort you put into creating engaging content and reaching out to your audience of readers.

Freelance Writing

If you already follow my journey, you'll already know that freelance writing has been my most abundant and consistent form of selling my content.

I've probably earned five times what I make from blogging through freelance writing, and I know that the story is the same with many writers out there.

With freelance writing, you don't have to wait to build an audience. You are immediately paid the exact bargained worth of your content.

So, this option is best for writers who lack the patience to build an audience, and just want to get paid for writing per time.

Crowd Blogging

Crowd blogging is an interesting concept for writers to make money by churning out content in numbers.

This is different from social blogging on Twitter or Facebook where you can publish whatever you want.

With crowd blogging, you get to write according to more streamlined content rules as stipulated by the platform.

Some crowd blogging platforms include Justanswer and Waywithwords, where writers produce content on-demand.

If you're just starting out as a writer, I recommend trying out crowd blogging.

Not only with it expose you to learning how to write and deliver a wide-range of content types, it would prepare you for a great writing career going forward.

PR Blogging

PR blogging is one of the hidden Adsense blogging alternative.

Most PR bloggers do not like to be identified as such due to the exclusivity of their job, but you can always spot a PR blog from afar.

PR blogging involves publishing press leases for companies and shaping the reputation of corporates and individuals using content.

In Nigeria, the most prominent form of PR blogging is corporate press releases, and companies are ready to pay good money to reliable platforms to publish their PRs to the general public.

Affiliate Blogging

Affiliate blogging has been as old as AdSense blogging. However, many writers shy away from it due to the technicalities involved.

Affiliate marketing simply involves publishing content with the sole aim of selling affiliate products. This is popularly known as affiliate marketing.

An affiliate blog will publish contents with links to affiliate products, with the aim to get readers interested in and buy such products.

I've done affiliate marketing in the past with platforms such as Jumia, but I had to stop due to the unreliability of affiliate programs in Nigeria.

Many of these Nigerian affiliate marketing platforms are designed to leverage your content or platform without paying any reasonable money.

However, there are several foreign affiliate programs that you can register with and start your affiliate blogging career.

Vendor Blogging

This is similar to affiliate blogging, but there are few differences.

With vendor blogging, you don't sell other people's products. Instead, you leverage your content to market and sell your own products as a vendor.

In this case, you don't necessarily need to add links to your content. You can just add a phone number for customers to call you directly or chat you on WhatsApp.

This alternative is perfect for small businesses or work-from-home enterpreneurs looking to push new products to market using content marketing.

Sponsorship Blogging

If you're a prominent blogger, then you've probably been paid to publish content in the past.

This kind of content is known as a sponsored post, and many writers monetize their blog this way while publishing other non-sponsored posts.

However, sponsorship blogging takes this full throttle by exclusively publishing only sponsored posts.

This means that every publication on the blog is paid for by a brand or business. So, this is a great way to start earning money immediately for your writing.

However, it is important to note that to attract sponsored posts, the platform have to be popular or the writer has to be a well-known thought leader in the industry.

Most sponsorship blogs invest heavily in external advertising to keep driving traffic consistently into their platform.

Network Blogging

Network blogging is an interesting form of blogging where a writer builds a network of blogs in order to create shared value that can be monetized.

The blogs in the network would have something in common, and it doesn't matter if they are in the same niche or not. The goal is to create shared value.

For example, a blog network could have blogs in fashion, import & export, branding, and jobs.

The fashion blog can recommend customers that need branding to the branding blog, and those looking to export fashion products to the export blog.

That way, they could run several businesses that make money from that same network of users.

Network blogging can be done by a single individual, but most of the time, they are run by a group of bloggers looking to create shared value.

Celebrity Blogging

When you hear about celebrity blogging you probably think of Linda Ikeji or Instablog.

Yes, they are the model for celebrity blogging in Nigeria, and they are very successful at what they do.

Now, come to think of it, Linda Ikeji and Instablog do not depend on AdSense to make money.

They effectively have and run their own advert model that brings in very good money on a monthly basis.

And brands are happy to pay them to advertise their products in front of the huge traffic of gossip readers on their blogs.

For example, to advertise on Instablog or get a notable mention, brands pay nothing less than 2million Naira. Now, calculate how many of such ads Instablog gets in a single month and you'll see that it's a mind-blowing figure.

Celebrity blogging involves writing about popular news and happenings about popular people. Some call it gossip blogging while some call it viral blogging, but it involves publishing a high number of posts per day with the hope that one or a few of them goes viral.

If you enjoy writing short articles and have the time to write and publish several posts per day, then you should consider celebrity blogging.
